Default Question about part date codes

A two digit number with circles around it, stamped into metal (usually aluminum parts) is a date code, correct?

It makes sense to me, since I have a lot of 82 and 83-dated stuff on my 2/83 car (pretty much all the engine is 82). I saw a lot of 86 stamped stuff on my 8/86 built '87 944S. And there's a lot of 87/88/89 stuff on my uncle's 1/89 S2.

I bring this up because I found "80" stamped into my crankshaft cradle. Just thought that was interesting and not really possible, unless the part is shared with 928s (didn't find a PET # for it and I didn't look for a # on the part). I think that's doubtful.

Oh, and here's the bottom end of my 150k mile engine. Looks pretty good, IMO. Double-click for fullsize pics.
