Swapping a 944 engine into those cars is very difficult. The crossmembers are different, and the engine mounts to locations that are welded onto the frame. The 944 crossmember does not bolt it. It can be done, but it would take a decent amount of fabrication.

Not sure if the running gear from the 86 Turbo would work, but some of the 88 924S parts should bolt right in. You can at least swap for the 5-bolt brakes.

Like others said, awesome color and project. I've wanted a 924 Turbo since I was 15.

Nice project...the car looks a little rough, sure, but underneath I think it has a ton of potential. Definitely swap in the turbo suspension (and do a 5-bolt conversion while you're down there) but leave the Audi 4-cyl turbo setup and tune on that. Depending on how far you want to go, you can get serious power out of it - Porsche used that engine as the basis of the Carrera GTS, which made well over 200 hp at the wheels

good luck!

I should add that that Audi engine is actually pretty lightweight and (probably more importantly) comparably cheap to tinker on, especially if something breaks. Parts for old 924 engines are generally much cheaper and simpler than their 2.5l Porsche counterparts (Especially the timing belt...)

Congrats, Josh! It looks like it will be a lot of fun!

I got all worried when I read the title way too fast and thought you had gotten a 930. I was afraid my parts source was drying up! When can I come see it?

Nice find Josh, I have been wanting to find a 931 to play with for a while now. Naturally you pick one up for cheap right near me lol.

Don't feel too bad - the car was only posted for sale for 40 minutes before I found it

Hope things are going well for you. I swapped another turbo onto my car and don't have any blow by anymore. She is wicked fast too - I think I am going to get into trouble Still trying to figure out a slow spool but I have a friend with a smoke machine - figure I can start by looking for leaks....

That's cool. Hope you can keep that one alive.

Russ at DC Auto has 4 or 5 of those if you need parts. (i.e. crank bearings no longer made)

lol, well I will give double what you paid if you want to sell it

I'm still having that low vacuum with mine, runs great just the vacuum seems to be a little low on idle. I'm going to do the venturi delete in the next couple of weeks, hopefully that will help. I'm still going to come get a spare hatch from you next time I'm down that way.

What sort of vacuum numbers are you getting? I've been noticing at startup I might have 12ish and hot maybe 17ish at idle. I am thinking that is a hair low and am hoping that smoke machine will flush out some leaks.

Seriously, if you decide to not pursue the 931 much and want to sell let me know no joke. I have been wanting a complete 931 to tinker with for a couple of years now.

I'm getting about the same kind of vacuum numbers you have, maybe 11-12ish on cold idle and probably 15-16 when warmed up. I have great compression, 150psi on all cylinders so vacuum is being lost somewhere.

Thanks for the offer Colin - I'll keep it in mind.

On another note I keep on noticing your great looking cam tower in your avatar....I need to figure out a way to improve mine - thinking polished right now

I like the look of polishing but the trouble of getting rid of the rough finish in between the lettering etc. always makes me change my mind. Yours would probably look pretty good polished with the LR manifold and your wheels.
