968 Charging Problems
Hi there all,
I have a problem with my 968 in that it is not charging. The car was charging fine when i put it away for the winter back in september. I started it for the first time a couple of days ago and started using it again today.
However the battery has now gone flat and upon replacing the battery i have noticed the volt meter only reads 12v when running. The warning light has not come on however. Anyone got any ideas before what could be up with it before i fork out for a new alternator?? I really need this car ready for Sunday as i need it for work. I have read that the voltage regulator plays up on these cars but would that not cause the warning light to come on?
Thanks
Mark

Right i have disconnected the alternator completely and started the car. Still no warning lights on the dash? In the wiring diagrams it shows a charge warning indicator light. Is this a seperate light or am i getting confused? If it is a seperate warning light could it not just be a bad buld causing this?

I don't think you're supposed to get a light if the alternator is not charging; it only lights up when it goes to full field or maximum output.
You might want to remove the alternator completely and take it to a shop to have checked out. In any case, the only reason to replace the alternator is if there is a mechanical problem (bad bearings). otherwise, it's almost always the regultaor at fault. A regulator shouldn't cost much more than $30 US

Thanks for the replies guy. Panic over. Took all the connections off and sanded them clean and it is now working ok for the moment. The light at the bottom of the voltage dial was not functioning when the alternator was not working, although it is now.
Every other car i have have a warning light would come on when it was not working. I would have thought the master warning light would come on when charging stops. Still at least it's working.
Thanks guys much apperciated.
