Would you have more luck with relay from Opel?

I don't know specific model but Opel from 82-91 has a relay that can be used in place of OEM DME-relay:

Manufacturer Hella, part# 4RP 008 189-051

Thanks Jusii...

I gotta tell ya...for anyone on Long Island that needs anything 944ish I just wanna say thanks to Sonny at:

S.M. Motor Sports, Inc.
2080 Lakeville Rd.
New Hyde Park, NY 11040
516-775-8655

I called him, saw him listed on Clarks Garage, and he was awesome...he's actually leaving me a DME relay in a car on his lot to take up to my car after hours...doesn't know me from a hole in the wall yet he's doing that for me...also he said if I need I can have my car towed there and he'll run a diagnosis on it and check everything before I go and buy anything...couldn't ask for a nicer guy...

Jimmy, i am about 10 minutes from that Home Depot im pretty sure.. thats right in Co-Op City right? You are more than welcome to take a ride down to Fort Schyuler and borrow my DME relay if its any easier (may save you having to pay the now $5 toll on the Throggs Neck). If not, shoot me a PM and i can drive up and take a look.

Techno Duck...I appreciate it...I'm going up to New Rochelle to work anyway so the toll is required...I will PM you my cell...

I'm gonna grab one on the way up and get some wires to jump just in case...

I'm hoping that's it or it's gonna be close to $500 for the ref sensors installed...or least $60+ to diagnose the problem...Sonny at SM Motor Sports said he would check spark etc if I brought it to him...real nice guy...

The problem with the sensors is not the sensors themselves, its usually the connection to the harness. Follow the wires up from the sensors and wiggle the connectors.

OK...didn't wind up getting the DME relay but I did the jumper and heard the fuel pump go on and tried to start the car...it just kept cranking and then backfired a few times so I just said F-IT and called AAA...guy came and we looked for the "tow hooks" but to no avail...it kept backfiring and then a siren went off...WTF, I don't remember the previous owner saying anything about an alarm...this is getting interesting...

Anyone know if a 1987 944 N/A even ha a spot for them or "it"???

Gotta go back today and be there when AAA so I can push the damn thing onto the flatbed...

There are tow hooks on the front frame rails, but they are pretty high up and if not done carefully you can damage the front valance. Best course of action is to remove the front bumper (two bolts.19 or 17mm, very simple) and pull it up from the bumper shocks.

Sounds like you have an old aftermarket alarm. Time to start crawling underneath the dashboard looking for the controller .

What you need to do now is figure out what the alarm is disabling. Sounds like its not the fuel pump which is interesting. Time to check for spark and make sure the injectors are firing.

Jimmy, if it's towed by to Oceanside I might be able to swing by this weekend. My schedule is ridiculous right now, but if I have time I'll be happy to help.

Sounding more and more like when my early car's refrence sensor connector crapped out.
Try this - hold the throttle wide open while cranking. If it catches, keep the throttle on the floor and see how it behaves once the engine sputters up to around 3500/4000 rpm. I'd be willing to bet it smoothes out and runs almost normal.
What's going on is that the ignition timing is not being adjusted for engine speed. Older cars used a vacume advance on the distributor to do this, the 944 DME uses the signal from the refrence sensor. If the refrence sensor signal isn't there, it doesn't know where the engine is in it's rotation sequence (it doesn't know where TDC is) and just fires the ignition for it's default value, which seems to be around 4000 rpm.
The problem with my early car was that the connectors had turned brittle and literally crumbled apart. I had to replace both sensors and the harness side plugs as well.
BTW - you can get the Bosch sensors for a BMW (look for a '98 M3) for around $60 each and they'll work just fine.

Thanks guys...right now she's with Sonny at SM Motorsports in New Hyde Park, NY...

He's been great so far and comes recommended by 2-3 guys...he's very familiar with 944's and is a PCA member and frequents a lot of PCA events...

I explained everything to him and he's gonna give it a full diagnostic test and will tell me what needs to be done and if he feels it's something I can handle myself he'll help me get the parts...

Well 2 hours of Sonny finding the problem and a new DME, rotor and rotor set screw and she's fine...1st problem was most likely caused by DME relay and then I replaced the cap/rotor but the set screw wasn't in and fell out and caused the rotor to just rest on the crankshaft and not operate...

$150 cash and she's back...

Thanks to all who offered their help...

Jimmy
