Default A used 944 at 200k miles for $3400... worth it?

Was looking around craigs list and saw an '87 944 for $3400 with 200k miles on it. It seems like a good deal but the 200k miles scares me a little bit. Is this something to be worried about? The guy claims it runs fine and there are no issues.

If the car has been taken care of and the maintenance is up to date, then its not uncommon to see these cars well past 200k.

Mine has 200K and it runs like a champ, usually they dont make it that far unless theyve been well taken care of.

Exactly. If the car was well maintaned, then i'm sure it runs beautifully.

true it may be still running good. But at such high miles, all teh oil gaskets are probably leakinng if they haven't already been replaced.

also engines don't last forever even if well maintained, probably a good idea to replace engine bearings, piston rings / rebuild the motor eventually if you want to keep it for a long time.

what is 200k in kms? like 350,000 kms? that's pretty high milliage.

There's a guy on here with close to 400k miles on his 87 NA..if you take care of these cars they'll last.

Someone here said that the general rule on 944s is that they cost $7,000 to get one in good shape. Every dollar you pay to the prior owner under $7,000 you'll end up paying to get it into good shape.

A lot depends on what your tolerance level is for imperfection. Can you live without AC? Is it important that both windows operate? Can you live with a driveable suspension, or are you looking for something trackworthy? And, of course, how much wrenching can you do yourself? For a Porsche, it's not a bad car for self-teaching basic mechanics.

My 83 has 150k on it, and is currently down for maintenance after almost 3 straight years in service (where it wasn't down for more than a weekend). It's going to be receiving a new WP, belts, ALL rollers and seals on the front, all new bushings in the front suspension, oil pump drive sleeve, belt tensioner stud, rod bearings, oil pan gasket, clutch and related parts, ref sensors since I have a pair of new ones sitting around, and fuel lines.

Cosmetically, it has original paint and is a 15 foot car, but surely it's worth $3400 with all this work.

To the OP: Look at receipts, see what was done. The PO of my car had $3000 of work done a couple years before selling...which would be $500 in parts if I had done it. I'd trust a 944 that had been properly gone through any day before one that sat in a garage for 15 years.

A quick refresher...

A garage full of receipts is still < market value.

I might be able to get $3k for my perfect running '83 with 87k miles, sold as a running car.

Agreed, but you also can't put a price on reliability.

Market location may also make a difference. Not many 944s in New England.

http://www.cars.com/go/search/search...=&aff=national

Of the 80 944s for sale nationally on cars.com, 3 are from New England.

You don't see the running $1000 944 deals on Craigslist around here.
