Default recall letter from Porsche, cost?

well I was thinking about importing U.S porsche 951 or 928 from the U.S to Canada ( I"m in vancouver). Was thinking of importing a car from Seatle or in washington state which isn't too far.

anyways I looked at the process and looks like before you can bring the car to teh border to pay the fees and bring it into Canada you need to get a recall letter from Porsche to show that all the safety recalls have been repaired for that car.

so I did a search online and someone mentioned that porsche charges 1500 for the recall letter. sounds really expensive for a piece of paper.

anyone import a car from the U.S into Canada? did it really cost that much?

also what upgrades would a 951 or 928 need to pass the inspection in Canda? like gauges need to be changed what about lights etc?

The Carfax I pulled on my car listed the one recall it had and stated that it had been repaired.

This was several years ago and the only Carfax I have ever seen. I'm not sure if this is a Carfax standard or just a fluke.

according to what I read, to import a car into the country, you need an official letter directly from the company, has to be stamped by porsche etc.

I read an article about importing a cayman into Canada and the recall letter from porsche was 1500 dollars and the guy said that other car companies like honday or toyota would charge less than porsche.

There are a couple Porsche dealerships that are very involved with local Porsche clubs, at least that I've read about.

You might want to see if someone at the dealership can have them run the VIN to see if the recalls have been done, and just use the dealership's stamp - unless Canada requires that the stamp be from the manufacturer.

When I imported mine back in 2003, I called 1-800-PORSCHE and asked for a "Letter of Compliance", that stated that my car met all U.S. Safety and Emissions requirements. This letter also mentioned (certified) that there were no open recalls on the vehicle.

Porsche Customer Service faxed and hard copied me this letter for free. I've heard some say that they are now charging for this service, while others say its still at no charge.

When you speak to customer service make sure they know you are a private buyer and not a dealer and make sure that the letter is printed on Porsche company letterhead.

There is wealth of information on bringing a Porsche into Canada in the Canadian section of rennlist.

I didn't require one when I imported my '87 944. They didn't even ask for it.

I don't know I read it on the customs website about importing cars into Canada.

it says you have to provide the letter and paper work 72 hours before actually brining the car to the border so seems like a lot of hastle.

will phone 1800 porsche I guess and find out the cost.

They probably don't care when the car is past a certain number of years old.

It's the U.S. side that requires the vehicle title 72 hours in advance. That's all. They just make sure that it's not stolen, etc., etc. After 72 hours you bring the car to the U.S. side so that they can verify that you're exporting the car that is described on the title. Ask them if there are certain hours that you can bring the car. I arrived at the border crossing at midnight and they were okay about it.

U.S. customs clears it, they print out a completed form, and you bring the car to the Canadian side and start the paperwork/pay import fees and GST. They will also verify that the car has the proper emissions/catalyst sticker(s) and VIN that corresponds to the title/paperwork.

The 944 are all too old and no longer go thru RIV importing regulation. All you need is the title. Contact US customs on where to fax the title as they need to do the VIN check 72 hours before you export the car from the US. Show up at the US Customs office where you faxed it to with the original title and bill of sale, they stamp it and proceed to Canada customs office. Pay taxes and whatever duties. Get the car thru the vehicle inspection and get insurance. Done. Time to enjoy your new car.

actually I'm thinking of buying an early 928 78-82 from washington state to BC.

or possibly a 951 if I find one for a good price.

I'll phone customs to make sure you don't need a racall letter.

that 72 hour thing kidn of sucks. so you have to go and get the papers from the owner and fax them to customs then go back to Canada and then come back in 3 days to get the car? or maybe just ask teh owner to fax you the papers I guess.

thanks for the info.

nope, it was a cayman being imported into Canada, and the guy said the porsche recalll letter cost 1500 from porsche.

according to him the letter has to be on official porshe paper and has to come from the company and not the dealer or anything else..

I'll phone the customs I guess and find out for sure.

if it does cost 1500 I probably won't buy a car from the states as it wouldn't be really worth it any longer.

well thinking of a 928 or maybe 951 but I really like to have something with a v8.

I just got my letter in the mail. Didn't get charged a thing. I'd be willing to bet anybody at PCNA claiming there's a charge for this is pocketing the money.

Called one afternoon, they had the form I needed to fill out faxed to me within 20 minutes. Filled it out with the VIN, faxed it back, and the clearance letter was faxed within an hour. I recieved the original in the mail about 3 days later.

If you call and they tell you there's a charge, call back and talk to a different operator.

Although if you're looking at anything past 15 years old I don't think you need the recall letter.
