I had an 84 that didn't like to start right away. When it would take a few times turning over you could hear the little flapper in the air flow meter slapping shut between each stroke. It was a definite hollow aluminum sound.
It's a little hard to diagnose from "clunk clunk clank clank" though. What year and model is it? More info please.

Lifters usually continue to clunk after it gets started for a bit if they leak down. You can hear them catch if it is more than one while it is idling.

it does take like to turn a few times before it starts but sometimes it turn and right before it starts up the engine there is a loud noise that kinda startles you i would say almost like a back fire

ok so I am doing as much research as possible on this subject I now do not believe that is the starter is it possible that if there is air inside the clutch that it will make a loud noise when you trying to start maybe because the clutch is not fully dis engauged?
