Pm-ed.

Quick question, how long do you guys usually go between timing belts, and the other assorted maintenance?

I did the belts when I bought the car with 112k on it, then I did the belts when two of the rollers started to get chatter (Replaced all rolers and waterpump) at 125k, and just replaced the belt again when I did the headgasket at 133k, but this will likely be one of the last jobs I do as I have another car for a daily driver now so she'll only see maybe 500 miles a year.

A lot of guys opt for the 3 year or 30K - whichever comes first - on the timing / balance belts. The waterpump and rollers, unless they are visibly / audibly problematic, are then done every other interval. If you do this, you can drive worry free. The chances of a problem developing are about as low as they can be.

Unless you have solid proof of when those items were last done and it is under 3 years (almost never is), you need to budget for doing those when you first get the car. If you want to own one of these, you should be prepared for a reasonable cost of purchase, and a relatively expensive cost of ownership for maintenance. But they are worth it.

The red S2 is a manual - I like all 944s, but wouldn't want an early car unless it was really cheap or wanted a racer.

Not hating on earlies here, but in addition to what was mentioned (limited wheel options, retro dash), you're looking at a 5 digit odometer and a recessed windshield (it's not flush with the body).

I'd probably go with an '87 or newer, just for the expanded wheel choices.

Joel, what is the scam? Seems like it would be hard to pull off if you were inspecting the car before parting with any cash.

BEWARE - S2 is a scam. Whenever the location is missing that is a dead give-away. It was list here in Atlanta on craigslist a couple days ago. I emailed on it just for fun before flagging and this is the response I got - I hate these folks!!!

*****Hi,First of all I must mention that I will not negotiate the price , $2,900.00 firm. Reason for selling the car is that I just finished the divorce with my husband and this is one of the things that court left me. I don't have a driver license so it's useless for me. Clear title, 78476 miles on it, manual transmission and well taken care of. As payment method will use only eBay. As protection I am affiliated at eBay and I have a purchase protection account for $20.000 USD. If indeed you are interested to buy the car please let me know your full name and shipping address and I'll start the eBay process immediately. Looking forward to hear soon from you.Pictures available at : http://s252.photobucket.com/albums/hh24/tests008/944S2/

Hi,
I would like to buy the S2 that you have for sale on Craigslist. Can I come out and look at it today? Where in Atlanta are you located?

If you google that email address it looks like the scammer posted the ad on the Houston craigslist too but it has already been flagged. Low life scum - If they put as much creativity into an honest job they would probably be pretty successful.

Scum scammer - the Boston CL listing in the OP has the same email address: tantina33@msn.com

Hmmm... wonder if there is a way to make that email address unusable

The scam would be to get the money upfront for a long-distance deal while convincing you that there is some sort of 'purchase protection' in place that'll escrow the money until you are satisfied. In reality your money would be gone.

It looks like some scams these days are just trying to get your ebay login so they can sell a bunch of pretend stuff on ebay using your good feedback account. They send you a link to a fake ebay login page and you type in your account info. That's worth a bundle to a scammer. Pretty soon they list stuff for sale on your account, maybe make deals via PM to sell outside of ebay and take deposits via Western Union.

FYI that white 89 sounds good, but a couple things worry me. First is that the seller doesn't know what type of car they have ("S" when it's not actually an S). This isn't necessarily a bad thing; I got my 951 for stupid cheap because the seller didn't know what the car was about. As a result, I've got an '86 951 with the best interior I've ever seen in a 951.

The second thing that bugs me is the seller's comment re: the "valve job." What on these cars is there to do when it comes to valves? The valves on these 8V motors are all self-adjusting. Perhaps he busted a TB, causing the engine to seize and consequently bending some valves? Hmmm...

Also, don't just take the seller's word for any maintenance that's been done. Unless he's got receipts, his word is completely useless to you.

This just popped up on craigslist. Called the guy, TB/WP supposedly were done 6k ago, and in the pictures it looks semi-ok. He's sending me much more detailed pictures, And I might go look at it in a day or two.

edit: whoops forgot the cl link http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/car/589340462.html

Looks like its worth going to see anyway. Engine bay looks clean. Paint looks good, I like them without the side molding. The proof will be in how it drives. I would have thought you could get it for $3000

Just because the car had a "valve job" doesn't mean valves were replaced. He could've had the valves removed and stem seals replaced, etc...

Also, it might be an optical illusion, but the bumper on that early red car seems to be pushed in a little on the drivers side. I also bet its at 124,000 vice 24,000 miles like the ad states.
