Default headlight flip up....but not down

It's a wierd situation. When I turn on the headlights, the headlights flip up. But when I turn off the headlights, they don't go down.

I also noticed that when the headlights are on, the electric motor **** is very tight and it seems like even though the healights are in full upright position, the motor is still cranking away.

right now I've removed the relay and just resorted to manually cranking the headlight up and down.

any suggestions and methods? I've tried with a new relay ....so that's not it.

Lube up the joints in the arm that spins with a lithium-based lubricant. You'd be surprised how much this helps. Mine did the same thing.

Check the fuses and try replacing the light switch **** left of the steering wheel with a known good one.

Also check http://www.clarks-garage.com/ and get the correct voltage readings at the headlight motor. I have the same issue as you, and I think one of the wires is faulty because i am not getting the correct reading. I have already changed the switch in my dash and the relay on the motor. Good luck.

Now that you mention it, there's a connector in the wiring harness to the headlight motor that gets cracked in some cars like my 83.

If yours is cracked you can splice in a used connector from a dismantler and it will fix the problem.

problem fixed. at least for now.

on the driver side, the ball joint thingie that goes into the hole on the bracket. it was popping out and hitting the ..i think it's the radiator reinforcement brace. a couple of whacks with hammer and a dollop of grease. it still rubs against it but at least it goes up and down

for future reference, the ball was popping out of the hole that's on part #14. prob cause my #11a and #12 retaining clips are ...gone hehe.

erics944,

If your problem is not mechanical and is rather electrical than read on.

as far as I can remember the lights switch has two positives. one controlled by the ignition switch and one from the fuse board.
the one from fuse board controls lights going up and the one from the ignition switch controls the lights going down.
so if you are missing the 12+ from the ignition switch your lights wont go down

I THINK that the one controlled by the ignition switch is the red one in the picture(circled)
I remember taking that picture for somebody who had the exactly the same problem as you.

Good Luck

When I had this problem it was the rotary switch on the headlight motor that controls the headlight operation. I replaced the motor and then figured out how to fix the old one.

There are some contacts that tell the motor if the lights are up or down so it knows when to stop rotating for a given up/down setting. If they are worn or burnt they do not flow much current at the extremes. In my case if I gave the override a quick spin the lights would go down, no problem. It was just the very end of the contact area that was dirty and worn, so it would get to a clean spot and start working.

Not only are they $$$, they are a pain in the #$%^ to install and look good at anything closer than 8 feet.
