Default PS rack rebuild questions

I need to rebuild by power steering rack in a 1984 N/A. I had the rack out of the car and partially disassembled today, but couldn't get the big collar to turn so that I could remove the rack housing. When I looked at it closely, it appears that there are two bits of metal acting, I presume, like woodruff keys. I suppose those little metal bits are going to have to be sheared in the process of removing that collar?

I searched an found a thread from 4 years ago that was somewhat helpful, and indicates that the collar in question can be removed without too much agony.

Has anyone been down this road and can shed some light?

Thanks!

The metal bits just keep the thing from spinning itself off from the vibration of the car over time. From what I remember I made a bit of an attempt to remove the metal and then just loosened the collar. Seems like the rest of the metal just moves out of the way when real force is put on the collar.

I finished rebuilding my rack this afternoon.

Those little bits of metal I referred to in my original post aren't really bits of metal. They are impressions made by a chisel or something that deform the very edge of the threads to create pressure against the collar.

All in all it wasn't too bad of a job.

Well I guess you got lucky none of the internals were broken. There is no source for those parts. One of my internal parts was broken so I had to go buy another "parts" rack. And disassemble it.

Where did you guys get the "rebuild kit". The rack on my '91 s2 is leaking pretty good.
