Default Installing motor mounts

This is my first time installing motor mounts. I see that Porsche uses a VW tool to suspend the engine while the cross member is taken out. I dont have this tool but will fabricate if needed. Does anyone have any better ways to install these?

just go to lordco or napa and buy an engine support, then lift teh motor up a bit with a jack by the oil pan (using a block of wood) and hold the motor up on teh engine support with chains attached to the engine lift rings.

I paid like 100 bucks for my engine support, some here told me to use some two by fours but I felt safer to use a proper engine support.

Motor mounts can be installed without removing the crossmember and supporting the engine by the oil pan with a suitably large pad to distribute the load. Not as easy as dropping the enitre crossmemeber, but can be done.

+1

1. Loosen MM bolts.
2. jack up oil pan with a 12x12 plywood or something.
3. Remove a crossmember bolt, and thread it back in 2 turns. Repeat for all 4 crossmember bolts.
4. Undo and remove all the MM bolts and swap the MMs.

For the driver side MM I had to chop about 8-10mm off the motor mount stud in order to have enough clearance to maneuver it in. It's fine to chop a little bit off - it's plenty long and when everything is put together it won't make a difference.

I just used a long 2x4 when I lifted the engine with the pan with the floor jack, and then once I had the engine to the desired height I just stuck some jack stands on the ends of the 2x4 to hold the engine up. Probably not the best way, but it was only like that for a couple of hours.

I am going to use something very similar to your set up techno duck. I am just using a piece of tubing to go across the engine that will be mounted with a saw horse on each side of the car. Then i fabricated a hook that I welded to the pipe to put tension on the engine in able to suspend it in air. I cant wait to get these things in tomorrow! My car has been shaking loose for over a year now

This rig kicks butt, and the rubber feet fit right inside the fender channel.

People have used the oil pan as a support point, but it's a really bad idea. If you enjoy replacing motor mounts, you'll love replacing a cracked oil pan.

That looks just like the VW special tool called for in the manual. What's the fun in using a special tool when you can use lumber??

Kevin,

Google has never heard of a Bend Pack RST500ES, therefore it does not exist. Where did you find such a non-existent beast?

Steve, that's classic!

I really don't think it's necessary to suspend the engine and drop the whole crossmember, just to change the MMs. It was no problem just slightly lowering the crossmember (bolts still in) and swapping out the mounts.

Some of you guys may have had better experiences with installing these, but i had one heck of a time getting those things to fit. When i did get them in and everything was bolted back up I looked at the old ones and they didnt seem to be that bad, although the car runs alot "newer" and feels tighter for lack of a better word. I am pleased with the results!
