Default How long does it take to replace time chain tesioner and chain on the S?

Did a thorough search, seems the the time chain tensioner can be replaced within 1-2 hours on the 944S.

But how much longer will it take if you do the timing chain also. I believe that requires the removal of the cams plus much more.

Trying to get an idea of the labor charge.

Thanks!

why...is the chain bad? are the links broken? if the tensioner pad failed and the cam teeth got munched I'd say time to replace it. if you're just maintaining, I wouldn't change the chain.

otherwise you're in for a huge labour bill.

As far as the pads go...I can have it done in 45 minutes. Remove the spark plugs, valve cover and 13 bolts, 2 hollow screws for J-tube, 2 screws for tensioner mount then slide it out. Next, slide off top pad, unscrew the bottom pad, screw on the bottom pad, install top pad, replace tensioner with 2 mount bolts, replace J-tube with new crush washers and 2 hollow bolts, replace valve cover and 13 bolts. I could probably actually have it done in 30 minutes.

As far as the chain, you're looking at pulling the timing belt, all of the camp caps along with the tensioner and then sliding the chain off. Probably take me close to 3 hours to replace a chain on my car. I had my cams out and didn't replace the chain. If it looks fine, don't replace it.

The tensioner is so easy, you could do it yourself. If you can change oil...you can change the tensioner out.

Im in the process of picking up a relatively well maintained driver "S", but with 250km+ (160k miles+). The pad was changed two years ago, but the tensioner nor the chain itself appears to have been changed.

So Im debating if I should replace the tensioner as preventive maintenance or go all out and do the chain too.

On the 968 it takes me a few hours, maybe the better part of a day. It should be quicker on the S because it's just a chain tensioner not a hydraulic variocam tensioner.

So what do all the "S" owners think I should do?

I have a 87 944S, I agree with the others who say if the chain is good, then just replace the tensioner.
