Default wipers finally stopped working entirely

hey guys what it is??!! long time no post. etherjoe here, got a 1992 968 with windshield wiper problems.

okay, after cutting out occasionally for the past few months, my windshield wipers have finally stopped completely.

The wipers had been cutting out every now and then for a while. The wipers would be in intermittent mode, would complete a sweep, and then never re-engage. I would move the stalk through all 4 positions (intermittent, off, 1X, 2X speeds) and still nothing. I was able to restore operation by giving them a tug while the stalk was turned on.

This time though - I got in my car after it having sat all day, turned the wiper stalk to 1X and nothing. I tugged a number of times but no dice.

Replace the wiper motor? I mean, when it was operating it seemed fine with no weird noises. Assuming it's not the fuse. . . I will check tomorrow morning. . . any suggestions?

Based on your "tugging" experience, sounds like the switch on the column. When I had a similar problem (mine wouldn't turn off), taking the steering wheel off and spraying the switches with contact cleaner worked. Of course, my early 944 doesn't have airbags and all that so it was easy. YMMV!

I understood you to say that you tugged on the wiper arms, not the switch. If so, I would say wiper motor. If it was the stalk you tugged on, I would say switch.

Sup dude? I suggest putting a nice layer of Rain Slick on ur windshield until you get the wipers fixed. This actually gets me by most rainy days without even needing wipers.

I remember you mentioned this problem to me and I couldn't figure it out. My guess would be the motor as well, since it previously took a physical stimulus to revive it. It reminds me of how failing starters can sometimes be revived by hitting them with a hammer.

Now that I re-read that, I feel pretty stupid.

Wiper Motor. The tug would engage the gear which the teeth on it are probably worn down. Just opened up the motor on my friends early 944 and the teeth were worn down, his worked with an occasional tug as well. We found a few 944's at a local junkyard and purchased a wiper motor for 25$. Workin great now..

I would agree that it is the wiper motor, I actually just replaced mine on my 85.5 944 last week. it was doing the same thing that you described.
