Drop an 'S' motor into an '86 n/a and see what happens!

That is what we did with Brad's car (ilikemy944)...do a search for the thread.

S gear box has the same final drive as an NA, but 1-4 are taller (a la Turbo) and five is shorter than an NA.

umm... some peeps here got it a little off. I have had two 8v and current S. The S has way more s.o.t.p. hp. Sure, in numbers it's almost 40 which doesn't sound like a lot, but that's 30% more. It makes a MAJOR difference. Especially on the fwy. I clocked off a couple 1/4 mi. runs using my G-tech. 15.2 and backed it up with 15.6. Both at about 90 (I'd have to go look at the log). Before you snicker at the g-tech, I've ran it many times at the strip in my vette and the furthest it's ever been off was .05 seconds. (5/100)
The gearing is different than the 8v. I didn't like it at first because it was revving high on the fwy (most of my DD) but I got used to it and now prefer it because it accelerates pretty good w/o downshifting.
Yes, you have to run premium. Like which car in my sig doesn't??? LOL.

Now, having said all that... I would have/should have waited and got an S2. I would like (who doesn't) a few extra ponies w/o a turbo.
All in all, if you put the S (or S2) next to a stock turbo, you'll still be able to read the turbo's license plate at the end of the 1/4 mi. and then still have money to buy the other guy a beer or two.

It was not geared for better acceleration, Porsche put the Turbo gears, which are longer, in it. Same final drive, but longer gears. Sure it doesn't have the top end of a Turbo trans, it'd never get past 140 on a flat road. Also due to the gear ratios, you'd be putting more torque to the ground with the 8 valve trans. As far as AX is concerned, it really depends on the course you're driving as to which trans would work out best.

That's really not a true statement. Yes, the S2 will have the immediate jump off the line, but once the turbo spools it's all over. IIR my numbers correctly, the S2 will do the quarter in low 15/high 14, while the 951 is low 14s/high 13s. I'm planning on owning an S2 someday because due to the high CR its a much more streetable car IMO. Nice to rev and definitely pulls quite hard, especially for an N/A 4-banger.

Interesting and divergent responses. Thanks. The reason I asked this was Peter Morgan refers to the 944S as "somewhat of a puzzle" and left it at that. It looks like that's about as true a statement as one can get consensus on.

Again thanks.

I love my S, except I'm probably the only idiot running the S with a 951 transmission, which slowed the acceleration down closer to that of an n/a 8v. When my S transmission died I could not find another S tranny at the time, so swtiched to the 951. Anyways, I think the factory could have done alot better with the S, so I made this my project. I'm trying to make the S into what it should have been (Better suspension, brakes, a little more juice, turbo rims w/bigger tires) A car that makes a good street car but is a track car at heart. Then I'm gonna sell it and get a 951

This an engine that has hundreds of thousands of dollars into development.

Why do you say it would take 10 seconds?

What do you think he runs for a timing curve?
I am interested in your educated opinion.

Yep....I like my S too. Mine doesn't have too many fancy options, runs great, and drives great too. I'm planning on doing a few mods to it to make it a little more than what it already is, but no matter what I do to it......underneath it all.....it's still a Porsche. And thus a finely designed automobile. Just my two cents.

I think your "S" looks good. Sure its different and your exhaust is a little cricked, but overall I wouldnt mind mine looking like that.
