Default What would cause an oil mist in engine compartment?

Noticed a little bit of an oil mist in the engine compartment when checking oil this morning. Cleaned it off but can't see where anything is coming from...it's got me a little worried...I really don't need an engine fire!

What? Where was the mist deposited in the bay?

Look underneath it Darren... any indication of seepage from anywhere? How about up front around the power steering pump?

Did you let it run and watch the motor?

Your car is being picky lately! Call me if you need to... I'm around all day. Will be in the garage in a bit working on the turbo.

Make sure the dipstick is completley seated in the tube. I have left it slightly hanging out before (not sure how) and had some oil over the intake manifold.

Jon, that's EXACTLY what it looked like.

E, I didn't see anything underneath. Let it run for a bit too, didn't see anything. I'll probably go out and take another look in a bit.

Not seeing anything after firing it and running it for a while. Nothing dripping down except water (washed it today). I think Jon nailed it on the head...but I'm gonna have to keep an eye on it after driving around tomorrow.

Haha, that's me! Washed the car here in Oregon with it supposed to rain by tomorrow night.

I'll have to keep an eye on things tomorrow though.

Say...where are my wheels? :P

Yikes!
If you still get oil mist check the block breather hose under the manifold. This goes from the air/oil separator to the rubber J-boot. If you have an air leak in the system caused by the dipstick or oil cap being loose, you could be running lean, too.

Thanks Tim. It's going to be driving me nuts tonight until I drive it to work and back tomorrow! I'm sure it's nothing (again, I think Jon was on to something, I'd checked my oil a few days ago and didn't really look to see if I'd fully seated the dipstick), but it's one of those things...

Just be thankful your not driving a DSM, Evo or anything powered by a 4G63... the dipstick popping out think is probably posted on there forums as often as 'how do i turbo my n/a'.

Darren,
You sell your NA and buy a 951, that's how.
Hey, give Eric ( Schwenter) a shout and get together up there.

I know, I know. Eric and I get together often...whenever he gets around to pulling the engine in the track car I'm the second set of hands.

Okay, so...definately still have a coating of oil on the intake manifold. Looks like it is coming from under the manifold near in the area "behind" the number 2 plug. I can't see anything - ran the car and there wasn't anything coming out, even had someone revving the car to see if that made a difference. No dice. I can check the block breather hose eventually, but it looks like the manifold has to come off in order for that to happen. Damn. Right after I get the radiator issue sorted...

Update...Because it's driving me nuts...went and took another look. Oil definately got on top of the manifold because it "bounced" off the hood. There's a spot on the hood pad that's got oil on it. There's a small pool of oil underneath what appears to be a sensor under the #1 plug. It's spraying from somewhere, I just can't figure out exactly what from.
