Default 87 944 N/A runs badly - RESOLVED

Well after 8 wks, I finally get the clutch replaced [long story why it took so long] but now the she seems to backfire and at times misfire to the point where its like a dead zone. This is most noticeable at low rpm and causes a rough idle that eventually stalls the engine. When the rpm gets above 2500 the issue is not so noticeable, but I can tell it's just not running right.

The engine was running perfect before I started the clutch replacement. The speed/reference sensors appear to be installed & ok; i have no reason to suspect these yet.

Anyway, I am happy for the new clutch but I now I have a new issue. Anyway, hints and advice welcomed to help diagnose this one.

thank

Check your plugs and wires ! make sure the porcelan on the plugs is CLEAN and your wires are not arcing somwhere. I had the same problem, went to my 944 guy. He pulled the plugs to see how they were burning, cleaned the porcelan, put them back in..... ran fine !

Check the gap on the reference sensors.

Welcome Jeffery,
Check the connections and test the reference sensors. Even if you feel they are ok, reset. I changed my clutch on the 1988 in Oct. I was afraid to lose the washer glued to the reference sensor and have to take it apart to fish out the washer. I used a tiny drop of 2 part instant epoxy. Make sure the flywheel pins are at bottom of clutch. Review Clarks-Garage http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/ign-02.htm. Check the thickness of the washer.

It's a holiday, tell us your long story about the clutch replacement. I spent 4 hours getting the pan head bolt off of the sensor bracket because I rounded the hole with a dull hex.

Good luck,
John_AZ

Smile 87 944 N/A runs badly -- Resolved

Thanks everyone!

It was late last night when we finally got the clutch together and discovered the engine was running bad; so this morning I went back to the sensors and discovered my buddy [ was until now ] had clobbered the mark sensor connector where it plugs into the harness. End result -- the ground wire and the black wire were connected in reverse into the harness. I only noticed this b/c the reference sensor was not busted in a million pieces and the wire order did not match. So with nothing to loose, I cleaned up the connection, added heat shrink tubing for insulation around each wire, plugged the wires into the harness connector like the other sensor, and BAM -- she now runs as smooth as ever.

For now I just want to drive my car, later I will order the BMW or lindsey sensor as a replacement.

Thanks everyone,
Jeffery Concord NC

PS. To close this thread. I had an issue with the clutch replacement. We had to go back in and replace the clutch release lever b/c one fork was bent and not squarely resting on the throw-out bearing. Did not notice this the first time but we new something was wrong b/c I could not shift gears and the car would creep forward at a stop sign. oh well, got a used fork for $209 and all is just fine.
