Is there a particular brand of clutch I should ask my mechanic to use? Also, would it be worth it to have him use one of the Clutch kits from Pelican Parts (944 Pressure Plate, Clutch Disc, 944 Throw-out Bearing, 9 Flywheel Bolts, Pilot Bearing, 2 Release Lever Shaft Bearings, Slave Clutch Cylinder, Flywheel Seal, Throw-Out Bearing Guide Tube, Clutch Alignment Tool, Clutch Master Cylinder)? It's pricey, but it covers all the bases and should take care of all the problems I've been having.

Well the car is very soon going to be sold to a friend for more daily driving duty. And he doesn't strike me as the type to going Autocrossing.

IMHO a spring will be a lot more durable than a rubber disc.

Replace everything you can, and buy Sachs and OE kit from one of the well-known, trusted vendors. Their prices are fair, and you don't want to have to do this job again!

If you really want to cheap it out, you can buy a Valeo clutch disk with a spring hub. These were a replacement for people who wanted a spring hub back when the rubber hub was the norm for Sachs. They are standard good quality (if still available).

As a side note, in defense of the rubber clutches, the majority did all last 15-20 years and 70k-120k miles. There is nothing disrespectable about those numbers. The spring hub is a little harsher to drive and a little noisier. The rubber hub was a little cushy and more civilized. I'd be willing to bet that the spring hub is smoother at high speeds . . . . any thoughts???

Oh absolutely. My clutch was 18 years old, and a little over 120k. That's nothing to scoff at.

I was planning on using Pelican Parts. I've heard good things about them. Although I suppose I can only suggest that my mechanic order from them. I trust this guy though, he's helped me out a lot. So I should just pay the $800 for everything?

Then I would put a rubber disc back in the car. It is one more thing that will promote longer service life of the engine and trans.

You're the first to suggest the rubber clutch. Everyone else has said Spring, and some have even commented they don't think new Rubber center clutches can be had.
