If people talk about buying a new odometer gear, they're talking about the late speedo. The early speedo is quite different, and the gear on these doesn't break. A different gear comes loose and needs to be loctited. There can sometimes also be a problem with the odo shaft migrating into the wrong position, and you gotta get creative to fix that.

There are spedo shops that fix them, mine cost about $60 to fix and it was out of a 83.

The gear from my early odo did break but after replacement the shaft is now moving about. Total pain in the rear.
