My car had been sitting in the cold garage for a few days (20~30 F temps) and when started it kept stalling, really didn't want to run. I went through the Clarks troubleshooting guide and came up with nothing. I then tested the air flow meter air temp sensor (not mentioned in Clarks but is mentioned in Haynes). The resistance was way off. Swapped in a spare AF meter with correct resistance on air temp sensor and car started and ran fine.
So don't forget to test this sensor - disconnect AF meter plug and measure resistance between pins 6 and 22 (there are only 4 pins- pin nos labeled on the connector). According to Haynes, resistance at 59 F should be 1.4K ohms and at 86 F around 3.3K. I was getting 4K at around 30 F in the garage on the (cold) AF meter. The car is an early 85 but I believe all 944s have this temp sensor in the AFM.

I replaced it with a used one but did test the temp sensor in it to confirm good readings before hand. However, I was just perusing FR Wilk's write up on the AFM (http://frwilk.com/944dme/) and according to his chart on the 84 AFM temp sensor resistance, my original may have been good. Maybe it was a problem with the wiper track arm after all. I'll pry open the cover and take a look....
