Hi, I don't really do forums, but I signed up on this one a while back...seems like a good place to get some info.
Yes I'm a n00b, but everyone starts somewhere.
My rear half shafts came apart (1987 Porsche 944), of course while on the move. Flatbedded to mechanic, in process of repair.
20 year old car. I've owned her for 3 years and she's run beautifully, the previous owner seemed to take good care of her. No troubles, great condition!
Here's my question, if anyone has had experience with this model/age car before: if your rear half shafts have given up the ghost, were there other pieces/parts back there that were getting to be just as old and damaged? I mean, since the mechanic has my car up on his lift, is there anything else I should have him check? Without giving him license to start quoting on everything?
I'm probably not wording this correctly, but I'm at work and trying to be covert about this. I can elaborate more on what happened if necessary.
Thanks!![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

If you don't have any maintenance history from the previous owner; here's some items to consider:
Rear wheel bearings (if their not make a grinding noise, this would a preventative measure)
Rear wheel brake pads
Rear Shocks
All CV joints (4)
Small rubber fuel line near gas tank
Your budget??
Mileage???

My rule is that if it doesn't impede the car from rolling, don't mess with it. Stuff like rear wheel bearings is not cheap, and certainly not easy to replace. I've heard you can get entire half-shafts from autozone for about $100 though. If nothing else is broken I wouldn't mess with it.
