you can probably get a set of used ones from someone for 75 bucks. used trans isnt that expensive either.

I looked but can't find a post either here or on the flat 6 forums that had a link to autozone or another parts retailer that had new shafts w/ cv joints for about $70. Worth a look. if I recall, that was the online price only, so you had to have them check the site to get the price if you walk in.

That type of noise wouldn't come from the transmission without any other symptoms... Is it hard to shift? Does it clunk when you shift from 1-2 and 2-4? Flush your transmission if you're nervous, but by the way that you described the sounds, it's the CVs.

If the noise does turn out to be the wheel bearing, I did a little rechearch and found that a Federal Mogul bearing # RW 101 works and only about $10. Good luck!
