I believe there is a tool that fits the holes to make removal easier.

Whoopsie... got beat to the punch

OK, but water and dirt could get in! I vaguely remember in the rear these holes would expose the bearing - or my memory is failing...

In the fronts, you will see a grease cap, in the rear you will see the nut that holds the drive flange in the trailing arm.

The factory (and dealers) wheel alignment set up is mounted on the wheel centers. The wheel cap has to be removed to install. Of ocurse, on the painted wheel centers, which don't have the holes, the wheel should be removed to pull the center cap off.

The painted ones have the holes - they are located in the black lines in the crest (they are just hard to see).

I have seen center caps with AND without holes. The ones with holes are more common though.

I think the ones without have allen screws on the inside. My buddy's dad had them on his 90 928. it took a hour to change one tire with those miserable allens. I think they were an expensive option when they came out, and are the ones without the holes.

Hmm? I wanna see a pic of this allen you speak of! Maybe the center caps I have are fake or something but I don't recall any allens on the inside. I'll take a closer look next time I'm in the garage back home.

Use a small allen wrench to pop them off. I believe fuchs use caps without holes.

Not entirely true - I've seen fuchs caps with and without holes. I think the 3-prong center caps for pre'74 wheels were 'hole-less' as were the center caps for the early 74+ fuchs. Newer fuchs caps have holes. Not sure there's a rhyme or reason, but if there is, I'd love to hear it.

It varies. My 83 cookie cutters had anodized caps without holes. The 951 has plain caps with holes, the S2 has painted caps without holes.
