getting water flow back

getting water flow back
I just replaced my water pump and am having trouble getting the water to flow. I loosened the water flange bleed screw on the head and eventually steam came out then water. Temp gauge never got above 1/4. I have no hot water flow to the heater, car is on ramps. I figure I drained approximately 3 gallons prior and at this point have added 2 and the reservoir is full.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need to get the car off the ramps? I had no coolant problems prior to changing to the new type pump and thermostats.
HELP? TIA.

I did the search and it sounds like my problems are normal. Apparently getting the air out is a real PITA.
I will cycle thru this process some more, maybe rent a coolant pressure tester.

I think you might have better luck on level ground. That's the way I've always done it and I've never encountered any filling problems. You could also try a little 'mouth-to-mouth' - blow into the fill spout to put some additional pressure behind the water...

If you have an air compressor this vacuum bleeder/tester is worth the price of admission if you work on cars a lot. I've borrowed my friends several times and it works like a champ no matter what position your car is in.

+1K 'Slightly' is an understatement. I've never seen a specialty tool work so well on a task that causes many people to pull their hair out. It's nice being able to test the system first for leaks before filling. So far it's worked on my P-cars, BMW, Q45, old Chevy van, and a Ford Ranger.
