Default Pinion bearing?

I have been trying to decipher what's been making a high pitch whineing (metal grinding) sound, from the rear end. I had a porsche mechanic drive it that said he'd know just by hearing it. He said it's either the pinion bearing thats easy to get to on the transmission and if it is itd be cheap to fix, but he said if its the one on the inside of the transmission than i'd be better off just buying another used tranny which would be cheaper than fixing it. The car drives fine, its mostly just annoying to hear the sound. Anyone know how easy it is to change one he said that's easy to get to? instead of paying someone else to do a semi- easy job.

Not really a DIY, there are special tools involved as well as specific techniques. Most pinion bearings go on the 968 not really the 944 series, but it has happened. The only problem with buying a used tranny is you run the risk of buying one that will devlope the same problem in 5,000 miles. A complete rebuild runs around 1,500-2,000 depending on what you need besides a pinion bearing.
