Default Help identify my transaxle

Hi, Im a UK member looking for some help indentifying a gearbox/transaxle I bought for my 951 from Ebay. It was sold to me as a 951 unit but Im begining to have my doubts... I cannot see any casting number on top of the box (where im told there should be one), there is the remains of a label on top of the bell housing section but cant read it. There is a number on the right hand side of the box....016301211F (see pic). The unit is fitted with an oil cooler pipe. It doesn't look like an oil cooler pipe has been fitted to a non 951 gearbox (if this is even possible) as there is loads of mud and crap caked all over the fitting bolts etc which looks pretty ancient. The speedometer pick-up is a small black plug with 3 flat spade terminals in a row, its positioned just to the side of the nearside (us drivers side) output shaft.

The supposed LSD...I have tried holding the input shaft when turning each of the output shafts, and they both definatley go in opposite directions (so not an LSD then?). Im confused, so is it a non LSD 951 unit or not even a 951 unit? If not, what is it, an S2 unit with an oil cooler? Any help you can offer me would be much apprieciated. (see attached pics)

Probably an 86 951 transaxle without limited slip.

Default Identification numbers

Hi, thanks for your replies. Unfortunatley there is no number visible in the area indicated. Just as a matter of interest...were non turbo cars ever fitted with an oil cooler pipe? So...dont suppose anyone has an LSD unit or complete tranny they wish to sell??

IIRC, 86 951 trans were the first cars with oil cooler. They were typically, not always, on LSD trans. I do not know if any of the later NA cars came with oil cooler. Inspect the pipe before installing. they are very fragile. Your test does not rule out a worn out LSD that needs to be rebuilt.

You are more/as likely to find a LSD in Europe than here.

Sounds like a non-LSD and I'd say that's a dealbreaker. I think in the USA all the 86's got the cooler and not many of them had LSD. However lots of people see the cooler and think that means it has LSD.
It's an 016 so it is a turbo box. I am unaware of any non-LSD transmissions with a cooler but who knows? Maybe in Switzerland... at any rate I see 86 and 016 so I'm going to say 1986 Turbo non-LSD (as per your test.)

The seller might have honestly thought cooler=LSD so I'd give him the benefit of that doubt before calling the rozzers.

xsboost was selling an 86 turbo trans with cooler, non LSD. The cooler line is missleading.
