Default Engine Noise

I have a new engine noise, and I was hoping to get soe guidance as to what it might be.

So, yesterday, I was driving and about a mile away from my house, something under the car sounded like it was hammering away on the sheet metal. I stopped, looked under the car (I assumed I was dragging something), but didn't see anything in the dark.

The next day, I poked my head under and saw that the dustcover on the flywheel was cracked and flapping loose. So I took it off, tightened my alternator belt (it was squealing a little) and took the car out for a test drive.

The banging stopped (so I guessed right on one issue), but the engine started making a noise something like a dishwasher, like something was sloshing around. The oil pressure remained constant, the oil level is okay, I didn't see any smoke. Does this sound like rod knock?

It is a 1986 944na

I suppose now that I listen to it a little closer, it sounds pretty knock-like to me. something like a hammer tapping a steel table coming up from the bottom of the engine. I'll check the oil for metal when it is light out.

Anybody know a good NoVa/DC area mechanic and/or how much it might cost to get a bottom end rebuild. I'm on a budget and I don't have a garage.

Pull the cover and check your timing belt.

I know this thread is old, but I've been busy. I've finally done a more thorough check on the car and determined that the water pump is the culprit.

Now, off to do a search. Before I do so, though, if I have a timing belt that is only about 3000miles old, should I change it out when I redo the water pump? Should I make this into a 'while you are in there extravaganza' and redo the front seals too?

I'll report back with details later.

No reason to buy a new belt unless it was wearing abnormally. It is certainly a good idea to do the WYIT stuff. It all has to come off again (except the water pump) if you start leaking oil a few miles down the road...
