Wow! My car whines at like 3k or so. Doesn't whine at high rpm or low rpms, just in the middle range. Scares me to think that it could be this. I'm really just hoping it's TT bearings...
And yes, when did your car whine, how, and what did it sound like?

To answer your q's, the whining was constant and got louder with vehicle speed in gear. When coasting at speed the noise lessened somewhat, a sign that the load was reduced by engaging the clutch. On deceleration the backlash was even more noticeable, and driving at low speeds there was even an intermittent hi pitched grating sound...kinda like sticking a steel blade in and out of a moving fan (the best I can describe it), and I suspect that noise was from the small chunks that were floating inside the ring's tooth grooves.
The car in spite of the pics above, shifted smoothly and drove fine otherwise.
You could check on your ring and pinion without removing the trans from your car...just take the cheeseheads off on the passenger side axle where it attaches to the trans, and hang it out of the way. then with a 6mm allen head socket loosen the bolt that holds the side diff carrier (where the CV bolts to), then with a 13mm socket remove the bolts for the side cover. Pry it off with a pry bar or tap off with a hammer. You can see the pinion and ring gear very easily. Look for the above damage.
No damge is good...just that the backlash needs to be reset or the pinion bearings are worn. You can see if the diff carrier bearings are worn too by looking at the cup attached to the side cover. mine shows wear there too, so they need to be replaced as well.
Anyone have a ring and pinion set for sale?

Ive had one partially fail as well..
the car was perfectly driveable, but when I would accelerate or decelerate the rattling noise was SO LOUD that i couldnt hear myself yelling inside the car.

Why the hell are these things so damned frail!? I have a whine on mine that I hear, when I let off the gas I get a rattle. I'm hoping the R&P is not going bye bye.
