Default Torgue tube q's

It looks like me and a buddy are going to drop the motor on the 44, with it being out I would like to address an issue I have with the torque tube.

When I let out the clutch in N i get this grinding/scraping sound, like something is catching and spinning. My mechanic said it was the torque tube bearings. Well I'm not up on what bearings I need to replace, I went looking and found lots of bearings and such, but had no idea which bearings I needed.

The noise is coming from the rear of the car, not sure if that helps with the diagnosis, but its all i got to go on right now. This isnt going to happen right away, but i'd like to get some info beforehand. (Ive got a repair manual on order)

Clarks-garage IIRC has a writeup on the procedure.

A little past halfway down the page...

http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/trans-05.htm

Basically there are four bearings, you need to use some threaded rod to pull them out. Remove the bearings from the carriers and replace with new ones. You will probably have to rivet the carriers back into one piece. Also there are bushings that go on the inner side. I forget who but a guy in Albany, NY recently (maybe 2-3 months ago) did a group buy on the bushings (he had a couple dozen sets made at a local machine shop). May want to contact him to see if he has any sets left.

Just curious, how many miles on your car? I have a similar problem with the rear most torque tube bearing. Bought the car with 60k miles on it and the bearing was noisy. Now at 99k miles and it hasn't gotten any better or worse. Was planning on rebuilding when i do the clutch.

I estimate my car has at least 285,000 miles on it.

That was Jon Moeller who had several sets of bushings machined in Delrin. I bought two sets but I think he posted about two weeks ago that he was finally sold out. Unfortunately he is also out the 951 business so I think peope are on their own. Maybe Sharkey can make some up. Finding the 6006 ZZ C4 bearings is very hard and you might have to settle for C3 with Hi-temp grease. The OE bearings were C5.

Personally if my car had 285K on it I would be looking seriously at a TT rebuild.

Actually for my turbo the bearings were C4, I rebuilt my TT and the bearings cost me something like 24 bucks a piece.

Tim,
Do you have a link for the C4 ones you found? I'm really coming down to the wire and need to order some quick. Were they standard or Hi-Temp grease?

Thanks

Tim,

I have to bump this one because I'm pretty sure I need bearings for my '86 951. Where did you source them from?

Steve, what did you end up doing to replace the bearings?

Thanks
Tom

I bought the 6006 ZZ C3 from VBZ and split a 10 bearing order with another RL'er. Five American made bearings for $20 is a deal. Finding C4 was turning into too much hassle and time. The C3's have been used in too many cars without problems for me to worry about the tighter tolerance. I already had the new Delrin bushings from Jon Moeller.

Steve, thanks for the link.

Prices have gone up a bit, looks like 10 run about $40 now

Now the bushings, are they a must have when you are doing the bearings?

And since Jon is not making anymore Delrin ones, any idea where I they can be sourced from?

Thanks
Tom

Same price $20 for 10 bearings. I spilt my order with someone here and shipped him the other 5. You can use the old rubber ones if they aren't torn up when you remove them. I think the dimensions for the delrin ones are on Clarks-Garage.

I'm being really dense this morning.

The link you sent has this;

10 Bearing 6006ZZ 30x55x13 Shielded

Quantity in Basket: None
Part Number: 6006ZZ
Our Low Price: $39.95
Shipping Weight: 2.60 pounds

I'm not seeing 10 for $20 anywhere, I just want to make sure I order the correct ones.

Thanks
Tom

I think he typo'd. Meant to say 5 for $20. I can poss. make up some delrin bushings if someone finds the dimensions for me. Wont take long.

EDIT: found the picture. Taking a copy to my machine shop guy now. All I have to do is walk across the building. I'll let you know in a minute what he says.
