Default pinion bearing

hi new member with a 1994 968 cab for three years. I have 88,000 miles and at around 40 mph the dreaded sound of scraping can be heard only when you drive close to a highway barrier so the sound bouces back, is this the start of a pinion bearing failure? How much longer can i drive the car if so? How much to fix? Car runs great otherwise, thanks for any replys, phillyd

have you checked to make sure your heat shields aren't rubbing on the rotors? How about wheel bearings? What makes you think it is the pinion bearing?

car was brought in to a porsche shop, not a dealer, could not be properly diagnosed since they could not locate sound,i am bringing it to a dealer to see if they can pinpoint problem. thank you for your suggestions i will mention them to the service manager. I think its the pinion bearing because another rennlist member posted what it sounds like.

Wasn't there a recall or something on 968 for pinion bearing pre-load problems?

968 trans bearing noise is usually a "grinding whirring" noise heard through the whole car and more apparent on acceleration. The noise seems to be coming from the rear seats. Most of the bearing problems happened before 30,000 miles.
