Lots of good advise here guys.
The moral of the story seems to be: When you can't do something, you will probably know.
I have one thing to add, however.
If you are building a race motor, I highly recommend over-boring and installing sleeves, so you can use the piston of your choice. At only $80 a cylinder, it's a great deal for the added performance and reliability. It also leaves you a little more room for error when assembling the lower end.
Best Regards,
Benjamin Goldstein

You've worked on 911s? Pulling an engine should be second nature then

Ok guys, the engine's coming apart nicely. I've got the pistons out, the front cleared off, and just need to pull the crank out of the case and I'll have a nice empty block ready to go off for its cleaning dip.
So trying to stay ahead of the curve here, I want to replace most of bolts that came off the motor so I'm ready when it comes back from the machine shop.
Where's the best place to get them? McMasters-Carrs? Any other suggestions?

My engine rebuild is coming along nicely. The engine is completely disassembled and a fair number of parts are at the machine shop for various tests, cleaning and updates.
Everybody likes pictures - I know they helped me when I try to pull apart or put things back together - so I created some web pages with lots of pictures (and links to full rez ones) in case ya'll are interested.

That's my 44 project page, click on the 1st link on the top for the engine pages. Enjoy!
