Default whining 2

It looks like that balance belt roller was misadjusted up into the bottom of the belt above it, 1) causing it to spin and whine, and 2) pushing the belt up into the water pump pulley where it got worn away. It's supposed to be adjusted down to be very close to the belt below it.

I just read Mr. Wallace. He already pointed out the roller misadjustment upward. I'll be more attentive next time!

They make 2 different sizes of that roller you're holding in the pic (timing belt idler roller). Your car needs the bigger one, but it had the smaller one. This happens when an early car is updated with a late water pump - people don't realize they also need a late idler roller.

My PO used that idler pulley as a belt tensioner by doing just what I see in those pictures. Makes a horrid loud noise when its running. I moved the idler pulley down and tensioned the belt with the correct adjustment pullies and it was fine.
