Default Dial Indicator, Vernier Calipers, Snap gauges and other tools...

Hi,

Does anyone have any thoughts on the best value in engine inspection tools.

I am looking to get a dial indicator, inside caliper set, snap gauges and torque wrench.

Anybody have thoughts on whether name brands are all that much better than some of the knockoffs.

-Thanks for any info!

-Dan C.

I can not remember the manufacturer's names off the top of my head, my tools are at home, but if you plan on doing a rebuild more than once in your life on any vehicle, do yourself a favor and buy the good ones. The cheap sets are good enough for a one time build in most situations, but they sometimes will not hold thier calibrations as well and will start to give you wrong values.

I bought Fowler brand dial gauges from J&L on a recommendation from my brother who is a machinist, and I have been very happy with them. You can, of course, buy even more expensive gauges from J&L, but I cannot vouch for those. Generally, you get what you pay for. J&L had some nice deals going on when I ordered, which really added up to some significant savings. They only have one shipping option - overnight.
