Default The winter DIY project thread - prep

I'm gathering info and parts for my winter work on the '86 944 NA.

A little background first. The car was purchased in March 2006 with a broken speedometer reading 183,000 miles. In the past 18 months, I've put 30,000 miles on it. It's not a DD, more a weekend car that is driven hard in the mountains. also a couple of DEs and several AXs. It's time to put it on jack stands, in the garage this winter, replace the TB and deal with some other problems. Time is not a factor, money is always an issue, but I'm one that if it's going to be done, it is going to be done right.

Before I drove the car off the consignment lot, I had the following replaced:

Timing belt
Balance shaft belt
Camshaft ring seal
Camshaft seal
Crankshaft seal
V belt
Multi rib belt
Thermostat
Water pump
WP gasket

I've been informed that the front crankshaft seal needs replacing and the cam carrier gasket is leaking. I'm using a quart of oil every 1000 miles.

Another issue is coolant temperature. During normal driving the temperature reads normal. On the track, AXing, or in the mountains when I am really pushing the revs the coolant temp rises to the third line and stays there until I drive at lower revs and the temp drops. The fans seem to be running as they are supposed to do. The coolant has been bled numerous times and I'm losing no antifreeze. The radiator has about 15 - 20% of the fins closed/cruched/blocked.

In addition, I've just spent an hour+ reading past threads on TB replacement and overheating problems. Lots of good info.

A neighbor has the 944 manuals and the necessary tools to do the TB but I'd rather not bother him until I actually get started.

I'm guessing all the front seals need replacing "while I am in there".

The WP should be good till the next TB change?

The radiator should be replaced?

What am I missing?

Stay tuned.... it's likely to be a long thread.

I've not done my belts yet (were done just prior to purchasing, have receipts), but the pump generally gets done every other belt change. I can't speak to the seals, but I do know that retensioning the belts is actually a lot less stressful than it seems - I had to take mine off to do my cam gasket from hell and when schwank and I got it put back together...I was the nervous one. You probably already know it, but slowly is the way to go (and take photos if you have a habit of not remembering where things went).

Now, if you have lighting questions...I might have answers for you. :P

Winter is driving season in FL. A little cooler, better power and the A/C is effective!
Drivin' it like I stole it!

That's OK Spidey, it will hopefully be an easy fix that I can cross off the list.

The purpose of the list is to look at it everyday so I'll get this work done once the last two 2007 events are finished.
