You are better off leaving SS alone. It really doesn't take on color from the plating process like Todd says above. If it's a 400 series SS it might work OK, anything from 302 to 321 will be a disappointment and defeat the purpose of the alloy choice in the first place. Hold a magnet to it and see if it has minimal grip; if not leave it alone.
