Does zinc plating work on stainless steel?

For the look. I want to plate ss hose clamps for the car, so they all match.

doesn't really bite into the metal. You'll have spots of no plating and inconsistent coloring.

You are better off leaving SS alone. It really doesn't take on color from the plating process like Todd says above. If it's a 400 series SS it might work OK, anything from 302 to 321 will be a disappointment and defeat the purpose of the alloy choice in the first place. Hold a magnet to it and see if it has minimal grip; if not leave it alone.

These are relatively cheap hose clamps, which claim to be stainless. If a magnet sticks, that's good or bad for plating?

If a magnet doesn't stick I'd leave it alone. Check with your plater and see what they recommend for different grades of SS.
