Sounds like we have different definitions of charging, which is OK. I'm just talking about adding Freon to the system, which can be done cheaply (aside from the cost of R-12) and separately from the jobs of evacuating the system and drawing a vacuum.

I had a shop do the evacuation/vacuum draw, then I bought and added the R-12 myself, and probably saved some money from the markup on the Freon.

For evacuating a system, sure you would need expensive equipment. I had a shop do it for like $40 or something like that.

For drawing a vacuum you can buy a cheap tool which hooks up to your compressor, but I've heard the job takes a long time doing it that way.

Quick Update:
The new air conditioning compressor is in and working. It’s blowing colder than it ever did before. It was not too hard to do but getting one of the new fittings lined up and clamped on was a Pain In the ..
