Default Transmission rebuild

Has anyone rebuilt a Porsche tranny? I'm gonna be attempting to do mine this winter. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I have, replaced ring & pinion, all bearings, synchros and seals. I have a thread titled Transmission autopsy (or something like that). Originally it had a lot of photos but I had to remove most of them due to space limitations. I can post the photos on Imageshack with links.. You really will need the factory shop manual to do it properly as well as a hydraulic press, an over large enough to fit the aluminum case and some special tools (either purchased or fabricated). I'm not trying to discourage you but you really may want to read through the fsm procedure a few times before you start buying parts.

I've got the shop manual and have read through it twice, gonna go back through and read it a few more times. I've got an oven large enough to put the aluminum case in it. I don't have a press but there is a shop near mean that's a VW place and they do everything there so I could probably get them to press the stuff on or let me use their press. I'll take a link with pictures for 200 please! Thanks!

O.K. I'll post up a bunch of them tonight. Setting the R&P shims is the most difficult part. I used gear marking compound to look at the mesh patterns instead of buying the pinion depth setting tool they show in the manual. It sounds like you have access to what's needed..

The ones showing the R&P mesh patterns are: blue stuff- original R&P pattern (using a non-damaged area of pinion gear), white stuff- new R&P set after correct shim and pre-load.

How much work/ money would it cost to replace a synchro and 3rd gear cog? What would I need to do?

how long does it take to rebuild it for someone who's never done it? how big of an oven is needed? (dimensions?)

my 2nd gear is gone, but it seems better just to buy a $250 used transmission

I spent a month-plus doing it after work hours and on weekends and had never rebuilt a transmission before. I didn't measure the oven but I know where it is and can get the dimensions (it was barely large enough- I remember that!)
