Default How come I can't get the damn shifter out???

The car: an '87 944 NA automatic

So I followed the Haynes manual, unplugged the cables at the tranny, removed the bolts where the shifter meets the body, and while it's good and loose and clearly wants to come out, the damn thing just refuses to do so.

I can't tell, but it feels like the cable hasn't been detached from the tranny, which it has. Is there something else keeping it there that isn't shown in Haynes?

I'm soooo close to replacing the foam insulation. So close I can taste it! I can't stop now, man!

Aha, it seems I have to unbolt the brackets too. I'll go give that a shot.
