Default what causes ball joint binding?

Tried search, turned up a lot of "mystery noise" posts, but I want to know what causes ball joint binding.

I've had my car only 8k miles and I've been through two sets of nylon upper ball joint bushings per side and now I think I've got problems with one of my bronze bushings (popping when backing up and turning, groaning when low-speed turning and braking, etc: symptoms of binding, correct?). With the bronzes I went ahead and got whole Travis-rebuilt arms to eliminate my poor ball joint rebuilding skills and worn out control arms from the equation.

I've had the car aligned a couple of times at a quality alignment shop and the ride height is stock. The car is autocrossed and at least one of the times I replaced the ball joints, the ball joint was basically swimming in the control arm (upper bushing was bannan-shaped).
