Default ignition switch

Does anyone have a write up on removal of the ignition switch for later models. Hayes and Clarks instructions for the early but I have a lot of dash thats in the way of removal. I sure hope I don't have to take the whole freeking dash out for this.

Feel lucky, I have to remove the entire steering column piece since I'm doing the switch and lock cylinder together and the lock cylinder is a bitch while in the car. The hardest part is laying on your back with the blood rushing to your head. I think pulling the steering wheel, stalks, and the whole column might be easier than dropping all the adjacent stuff in front of the switch. It looks like only a few support bolts need to be removed to slide the whole column tube up over the shaft. I haven't done it yet but it looks like it would work. Famous last words!

I looked at it again and either I have to remove the cylinder from underneath or cut some metal. I best start from underneath.

Are you doing the lock cylinder also or just the switch? The switch is only 2 screws once you get crap out of the way, the lock cylinder has to be drilled out and a precise point to release it.

I'm trying to replace the lock cylinder and yes after removing the two screws, (oh joy) I found that wasn't necessary. I found the lock cylinder is held by a set screw, allan type. Its missing but the cylinder ain't moving so I came to the conclusion its drill time. I have a replacement cylinder and I can see how it all works. Not much fun and tomorrow is another day.

Well that turned out to be quite easy. I didn't have to cut any metal. I did remove a metal reinforcing plate that fits on the dash around the steering column. That was a matter of drilling out 5 rivets. That got me clear access with the drill to the lock housing. I was surprised how thin the metal is at that point. The exact point is indicated by a slight nub on the casting. I inserted a small allen key and pushed down on the retainer spring to release the lock cylinder and out it came.
