AFM- For Future Reference
My AFM had been acting up lately, even after re-tracking the wiper arm and giving it a good cleaning. The car would miss if you set an idle of less than 1000. It ran fine off idle, but occasionally you could smell an incorrect AF mixture.
I called up 944Ecology and they had an AFM from a 10,000 mile car sitting on the shelf. It was pricey (almost half the cost of new), but I bit the bullet. Going shotgun is the best approach for these cars sometimes. It idles like it must have in 1983.
Here's the interesting part...for some reason, it doesnt have the famous early 944 idle shudder anymore...I know there is a problem in the DME code, but I'm thinking old/worn AFMs exaggerate the problem. In any case, letting the engine drop from 2000+RPM to idle makes me think the car shut itself off...thing is almost as smooth as a BMW six now.
Just posting this as a reference if anybody has future AFM troubles and does a search.

My 83 944 had the "stumbles" cutting out when slowing down, I bought an FR Wilk chip for the early cars and it's night and day and a friend installed it in a spare DME I bought for the purpose. I have some issues with a loss of power and radio when going over a sharp bump like a railroad crossing so I put my old DME back, and I had stumbles again, put my Wilk equipped DME back in, smooth again. Is FR Wilk still producing these chips? If so, get one, look on e-bay, maybe one will turn up there.
