ah man... every time it rained my car would sputter a little when it would first start and took a little while till i got back to normal... then the last time it really ran it rained and it was sputtering but this time it kept getting worse.. unitll the car wouldnt rev up past 2000 rpm... i limped it to the nearest parking lot and had it towed to my mechanic.. he let me know that i need a new computer (DME unit) but he said good luck trying to find one.. so i checked ebay and tried using this one company and they ended up holding on to my money for 3 weeks untill they finally came to the conclusion they didnt have the part i needed.. so now my car was just baking in the heat in my mechanics yard.. you guys gotta help me find a part so i can get her runnin again

Oh man.

Look... if it rains do you know if water is leaking down to the DME? As in, is there a hole below the battery that water is leaking down the top of the DME?

Are you mechanically inclined? If you put a new DME in and the rainwater is leaking in the cabin from a hole in the battery tray, well... you are wasting your money because you haven't fixed the problem.

Is there anyone local that can help you identify this? Do you know what your are looking for?

Peel back the carpet on the passenger's side floorboard, remove the four screws holding the piece of wood in place and remove wood, dump water around battery, check for leaks coming into the area of the black box (DME)...

Good luck and let us know.

Also, if your mechanic said replace the DME because it rains, well... are you tied to this person?

You might try some of the dismantlers that specialze in p-cars; 944ecology.com, dcautomotive.com, automobileatlanta.com just to name a few.

George B at 944 ecology is an upstanding guy; he won't steer you wrong. I can't say about the others as I've never dealt with them.

That's a steal, believe me.

If it's any consolation, I just went through this and had to pay a French dismantler over US$600 to replace the rare DME control unit in my 951 which was extremely hard to find (part number 951.618.121.10).

So, consider yourself lucky!
