Default A rubber clutch for only $2,400, update on my car

AAARRGH
I got a call from the shop yesterday. The clutch in my S2 was replaced on 9/12/01 at 46,633 with a rubber centered clutch. Rolfs Auto Craft in Summit NJ charged only $2,700 for the clutch job and a tune up!! My error. The clutch was done because they had to take it out to change the rear crankshift seal. Labor was only 1,020 for that, parts were seal $55, clutch disk $750, PP $329, release bearing $189. A bargain.

I guess it is a good thing I am changing it for a spring centered clutch even though it has about 40% of the friction material on it.

I wonder where the techs heads were on that day? Maybe that explains why the bolt to the shift rod was overtorqued.

funny that on 9/12/07 the car has 71,130 miles and is getting a new clutch. Must be the latest fall fashion.

here is the earlier thread https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-944-951-968-forum/377221-should-i-do-the-clutch-too.html

Yikes. Hard for me to picture me spending that much on my 944.

At least all at once ...

I had a new rubber centered clutch (PO installed) on my old S2 cab and I liked it. I suppose for a track car you want something more rugged, but the newish spring centered clutch in my 89 S2 transmitted more harshness and clanking. When I could drive them both back-to-back it was clear why the rubber center was used by the factory. If they were still available I would suggest that they are a better option for someone who is OK with a 15 year-100K lifespan, few abusive starts, etc. They are probably OK for AutoX if you do not generally need to launch hard. I'd bet that not only do they make driving the car more pleasant they transmit a lot less shock to the transaxle. No big deal in an S2 but an issue with an NA. How many NA's with fragged R&P's had spring clutches I wonder?

Ah well I think the rubber center disks are no longer available so it's somewhat moot, but I did not see them as a weak point particularly. Yeah they generally broke before the friction surface wore out but they did their job.

I agree with you 100%. I thought it had a spring centered clutch just because it was replaced.

I wonder how long it would have lasted if I kept it in there and used the car primarily for "performance driving" events, which makes me feel a little better about dumping money into the car, which was not my 'dream' car when i got it, and is rapidly becoming a track toy for way more $$ than it will ever be worth. i am wondering if i should have started with something else, like a nice 968 or Carrera as a base platform.

Well, my original clutch went out in 99 on my 1984. The rubber center had decintegrated and took the tranny with it from the slop left in the driveline. The car had 71000 miles on it at the time. Tranny + clutch was a little over $3000

Tom, centerforce dual friction clutch is pretty inexpensive and seems to work very well even with high performance applications. The one I am using on my n/a has over 100k miles on it and is still going strong. The last set of clutch disc and pressure plate cost me around $400.

Hey Tom! Did you already move?

My spring centered clutch job cost me around $1,300 when I did it 2 years ago. Much noisier than the rubber centered clutch - keep the clutch in there if you can!

i am getting hit with a 2400 bill. 80 is for an oil change, so 2300 less the 700 he quoted me to fix the bolt on the shift rod is 1500 to do the clutch, TPS bracket and TPS. I guess that means i paid about 1300 for a 1300 clutch job.

im glad i got a discount by doing it all at once.

Andy,
I am packing the PODS tomorrow and friday night. We leave for denver early saturday, and i start the new job monday. the two pods arrive on the 25th and i am arranging for movers to empty them on the 27th.

the buick and bmw are supposed to be there by the 14th. they pick up the porsche tomorrow, and it is supposed to arrive around the 30th. lets see, 1200 to ship, 2500 just put into it, 1500 for the seats, about 1300 for the shocks and alignment. That means i just put 6500 into a car i could have sold for 8 before, and 9 after. now i know why henry kravis didnt hire me.

maybe i will start a thread that goes something like 'how much to take a street car and turn it into a DE, Autox car?

For me it was
seats $1600 new
roll bar $550 new
konis & align $1300 used
clutch & short shifter $2600 new & used
sway bars $300 (still working on getting a rear) used
rear rotors $? (swapped a near new jacket for near new rotors)
strut tower brace $150 used

Tom, we could have done the clutch in the garage . You and Dan could have supervised.

BTW, what model are the tires you've got for me?

So what you're saying is by November, some other lister is going to have your old S2 with a new clutch?

I should stop posting in clutch threads...my 83 has 148k and the original clutch.

i will have a used rubber centered clutch with about 40% life remaining tonight. whats it worth? lets start the bidding at $8 and go down from there.

when i thought i had a spring centered clutch i at thought i could sell it for a few bucks to someone with more time than money. i hear the market for used rubber clutches is pretty thin.

Hmm...my S2 had it's clutch replaced at around 67-74k miles. I now have 79k miles and it feels awesome.

Spec Stage II baby!

I am not sure about the more fun part... If you like to have some more of that fun, I just blew the head gasket (maybe more) of my 88 spec car to be at Willow Springs last weekend
