Default Some Tire Advice

Since Putnam Park, I noticed my tires have worn down considerably -- and while I have winter rubber, it would be good to prepare for next Spring with some fresh tires! I was wondering what fellow Lister's would recommend as a street tire that isn't afraid of some track duty, either.

I have an 86 NA, 15 inch phone dials, and I've been running Yokohama ES 100s, 225/50s. I know there's lots better out there, but I have found them to have great traction on the road and the track -- is there anything around the same price range as the ES 100s that does as good or better? Let me know!

Thanks,

Falken Azenis RT615's are brought up often when i read posts with similar questions. But everyone says almost the same thing about them, that they get greasy as they get hot.

I have also heard many rave reviews on the Fuzion ZRi. We bought a set for the 993, and for my brother's VW, and so far so good. I haven't driven either so I can't give you any feedback but both my dad and brother like the fuzions on their cars.

Just the HRi is available for 15's. I had some on the 83 but just for mileage and rain, I wouldn't recommend them for a performance tire. They certainly weren't nearly as good as the ZRi on my two other cars.

I wouldn't take an H rated tire on the track if I was payed -- for both the track and the medical expenses!

LOL - My son was logging 200 miles a day in the 83. After tearing up a set of ES-100's in 8K miles I was looking for something cheap, with a bit of longevity, and good rain performance since I was footing the bill. When I sold the 83 for 944 Spec use I think the new owner burned them up in one weekend just to get rid of them and test out the new motor. In short, great for a DD but El Sucko when heated up and pushed.

Kumho ecsta MX
i have these on my car, i have driven them for a full season of autocross, one track day AND in the snow (though i wouldnt reccomend it), in addition to the daily driving, they are a great all around tire, i run 205-50-15 and they were 73 a piece, so the price is right, i will definetly be buying these tires again, i highly reccomend them

If you like the MX in that size give the falken a try. $75 per tire, and they have more grip. They do get greasy as they heat up, but its not as bad on these cars because they are relatively light. On my GTi the falkens despite being 10mm narrower were almost 2 sec per lap faster around VIR. I have them for my 924 but they dont get used much as Ive bought a set of RA1s.

RA-1s would not be a good street tire, though, right? Especially given that I live in Ohio, which is prone to sunshine, rain, and snowstorms in the same day...
...In April.

Dude, those Yokohamas wear down sooo fast.

I had a whole set of them, and they just disappear. I looked at them a few months after I got them, and its like where did time go?

i think the falkens have gone up in price, but id wrather drive on the kumho's, the tread design is better designed for daily use, they have great hydroplaning resistance and performance is very close to the falken. if its purely a summer/dry tire, then id go with the falken's, but for my car, as a daily driver, the MX is more suited for me

RA-1's are only good for cars to you drive to the track then drive home. The next time you drive the car you take it to the track track again.

The are not street tires at all.

Maybe I should stick with a decent street performance tire for Spring 2008 and take a year to save for a set of 16 inch wheels to put competition rubber on, that way I wouldn't run race rubber on the road, and it would give me time to save for a quality tire, too!
