if you can put the car on jackstands and have one person drive and the other use a scope to see where the noise is coming from. be very careful. it might not be good for the cv's, but may be worth a shot.

OK, this is a reach but one of my cars has a noise kinda like what you describe. Its not nearly so serious but maybe worth a quick mention. Mine is a rear brake rotor touching the dust shield. Probably an easy fix, I just need to get under there deal with it...Bruce

I dunno if it's relevant, but this sounds exactly like what happened to the (automatic) transmission on my 944 before it blew. Luckily a used replacement was just a couple of hundred bucks.

More good info guys... Thanks. A few more diagnostic things to try and some encouraging news about the rebuild costs.

I have a shop that I trust that I'm sending him to for a second opinion.

It's not just 968's.. I have to replace my transmission (much cheaper than to fix) very soon because of pinion bearing. Very annoying high pitch whineing sound from the rear. Most noticeably on decel in gear.
