Default Do I need wheel spacers?

Hello. I'm a new member with my first project Porsche and very excited about it!! Thanks in advance for helping me out with the 100s of questions and research I'll be doing going forward.

Getting started... I purchased an 89 944 S2. The previous owner replaced the phone dial wheels with some 18" Carrera wheels that look great! BUT... the driver's side rear tire hits the wheel well sheering some of the rubber pretty significantly. Taking some tight rights I can make it happen fairly easily. I tried some lefts to see if the passenger rear would rub and have not seen any sign of rubbing.

First questions... Is this pretty understandable considering the 18" wheels vs the 16" originals?? Or... does the fact that it happens (so far) only on the driver's side point to a suspension issue or simply just driver's weight??

Second question... I plan on using this car on the track and want to get a set of track only wheels/tires. Let's avoid the wheel size debate and assume 17" wheels. When buying wheels, how do I know if I need spacers and if so, what sizes?

(if it matters.. the car including suspension etc has no mods... only item not stock is the 18" wheels)

THANKS!!! ~Jeremy

To make the second question more straight forward... if I'm looking for used wheels on eBay, Craigslist, etc... how do I know what wheels will fit and if spacers are necessary? Thnx again! ~Jeremy
