Default oil leaking out of the front of the lower balance shaft

and its BAD. What should I be looking at? The main seal? It also looks like the pulley is sticking out farther than it should, should i try getting it in farther? What else should I be looking at? Thanks! (Its pretty obvious the oil is coming from the front of the balance shaft)

Side note: My first major maintenance job (timing and balance belt, oil pump, and camshaft chain tensioner) turned out to be a huge success, started first try, and everything sounds better and runs better than ever, all except the leak =(

Are you sure you replaced the thin clear mylar seal when you had it all apart?

Oh man... did you put the correct size seal on there? Did you put the small seal back on the back of the rear cam bearing assembly, aka, distributor/cam gear housing?

Greenshoes... chill my man. We'll work this out with you. Are you sure this is where the leak is coming from?

The pulley is sticking out further? Did you put the collars back on and push the shaft back on the seal far enough?

Im really not sure, I will revive this thread after I have the car apart again probably tomorrow morning, The orange seal was not sitting flush in its socket, and the balance pulley itself was sticking farther out than the balance tensioner. They did not line up evenly. Do I just need to hammer that metal sleeve on more or what? I dont know whats stopping it from going in.

Should I replace that mylar washer though?

No hammering of metal sleeves!

Check your seals to make sure they are on the correct balance shaft.

I will check 'list tomorrow AM and await your findings... post a pic before you dismantle...

the mylar will definately cause a leak- if it's there or if you double them up. be sure to remove the old one.

If the cam still has the stock sleeve, it takes the seal with the larger ID hole but is the same OD. the one with the SMallerID and same OD goes on the upper balance shaft. The one with the larger OD but the same ID as the upper balance shaft is the one for the lower. All get mylars behind the sleeves. I start them by hand and finish running them back with the sleeve. Also check the sleeve for a badly worn groove where the seal rides on it. I normally go by, if you can catch a fingernail on it, it's time to replace it or regrind it. good luck I wish I could help further, I'm going out of town so I can't reply to any questions you may have.
