Yep that was my thinking. I'm used to the NA school of thought, where displacement is like money - you never ever want less. I'm considering turbocharging my 968 so I've been trying to learn as much as possible about the possible routes. That link to 944968.com above taught me the option of using a 2.5 crank!

+1 My 968 turbo displaces 3.0L (maybe a bit more? mighta been bored out a tad as well) using a 951 head, and, IIRC, 9-1 pistons. As such, it drives about the same as OEM when I'm not on boost.

I think the 951 head was used primarily because of wiring harness/DME issues. Since the 968's would be a b**** to install/program for a turbo app, the 951 harness/DME was used as well. If you've got to wire and program an engine with all the variables of Variocam, 16v and turbo, well, have fun!

Besides, isn't the 8v lighter, and leaves more room in the bay for peripherals?

well, id try to use the 16V head at the least...the best option would probably be to sell the 968 engine for $$$$ and buy a 951 block, sell the head and buy a 2.7 head. I think you'll have enough to buy the head plus most of the turbo stuff as well...Ive seen 968 engines go for over 3 grand!!

parts heaven here in california recently sold a 968 engine for $4500.

why would you put a 2.7 head on a 2.5 block? How would you accomplish this (the water jackets are different)?

By the same token, how can you put a 951 head on a 3.0 block?

951 head can be put on 3.0 block because you can modify water jacket and enlarge the combustion chamber. You can't make 104mm bore combustion chamber on 2.7 head to fit reasonably to 2.5 block 100mm bore.

WHY would one ruin the technology of the generously flowing 16v head on 968 and put 8v head to it?? Beats me.
If one has to say "this is cheaper", here's news: it's not. At least by a reasonable margin.
Markus951 just used thicker Cometic head gasket and that's it, car runs like a champ.

And one more thing: I've programmed many engines to run standalone, including VarioCam and it's not a rocket science, though definitely not for everyone.

If you wan't to do it, do it properly.

Yeah that's what I always thought, just use a thick headgasket and move on. I have to go read markus' thread... but it's so long.

We have done turbo and supercharger conversion on the 968 with the 16 valve head and with the 8 valve head.Anything is possible if you have enough money.

These turbo systems go near the end of the exhaust and then feed it back up to the intake. Some tracks do not allow them yet because the oil lines have to run to the rear of the car and there's some concern about them bursting/leaking. That will probably change soon though.
Very unlikely that they will suddenly be allowed. STS cars are nothing but problems, boost oscillation issues, leaking issues, random oscillations causing tuning issues, etc, etc. STS turbo setups are HACK.

I am starting my project this month. 968 turbo with the 3mm cometic head gasket. 951 rods, 951 plumbing, better turbo, modest 8-12lbs should do it at 9.0 compression. Good fuel , should put close to 400hp to the wheels ???
Where are the specs on that car Zoran ??
