Default Need help with water pump

I am rebuilding the front end on my 86 944NA and have some questions: 1. Do I need to use a gasket sealant compound on the water pump gasket or can I just use it the way it is? I would hate to get it all back together and find I should have used a sealant. 2. Which side of the thermostat should be I be looking at when I have it mounted in the water pump - the side with the little harp on it looks right - that way the springs are down inside - is this correct? 3. The thermostat is not tight when the snap ring is in place - Clarks Garage mentions a "spacer" - do I need a spacer and where does it come from? What is it made of? This is a "new style" water pump.

1. No sealant, just put the gasket on dry.
2. Correct. Look at this picture on the Pelican Parts site: http://www.pelicanparts.com/944/944_...83-85/pic3.jpg
3. This is the spacer you speak of: 900-234-160-00-M100, found it on Pelican here: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/..._pg1.htm#item0

I know they make 2 different sizes of thermostat gasket. You probably have a thin one. I found 2 part numbers on Pelican for this gasket - 944-106-929-05-M2, and 944-106-929-08-M2. I have never needed the washer, I just used the thicker gasket, but either way should work!
