Default How to check if car has a chip

I think my car has a chip because if I try to buy regular gas the car runs like crap, but if I get preminum it runs great. Does the chip stay on the car or is it just programed on the computer.

Which car? If it is the 87, you can open the DME and you should be able tot ell the markings on the chip are not stock. Check frwilk's page on how to disassemble the DME. Itll take you a good half hour once you have the dme in front of you, the first time.

If it is the 84, I believe the chip is soldered to the board and it would have to be something piggy backed onto it or something. Either way looking in the DME you shoudl be able to tell.

These chips aren't programmable.... most chips are complete replacements.

That said, the FRWILK chip, which is one of the few that have been available, runs fine on 89 or 87 usually, so i would suspect something else.

I'd guess your timing is off or you have poor plugs/wires
