I traced the line, and it disappears into the firewall. I cant tell where the connection is to disconnect it. I dont have to remove the engine to replace this line do I?

I dont have a factory manual, but I think you do have to do something or other along the lines of pulling the dash out to remove the lines that go into the firewall.
I cant believe nobodies said anything yet, I know the race guys should know how they come out because most of them remove all of that.

I just pulled my AC system out the other weekend. Could not find a reasonable way to get that line out - so I solved the problem with a hacksaw on the hardline closest to the frame rail. It is a race car, after all!

I don't have an early car but if you're talking about the two lines that run from the area of the compressor to the behind the cam tower, then they can be disconnected at the engine side of the firewall. It will be tough to get access to the bolt on the firewall but I think its do-able with the engine in. See pics... bruce

I did this several months ago so my memory is a little foggy. To get to the fitting on the evap. case I removed the glove box. As far as the engine bay, you'll have to undo the main wiring harness, the wiring and vaccum lines along the firewall, maybe the coolant line from the heater release valve, and removing the master clyinder makes it a little easier to remove the a/c line. Even after removing or moving all of this it's still a PIA!!!! to get it out in 1 piece, but possible.

wow. What a major PITA!!! I don't know if its worth bothering with now! Im going to hook up the new compressor and see just how bad the leak is. If its not too bad I can put up with adding refrigerant here and then.

Im willing to pull it out if its even remotely accessible! I took a look at it last night. The line runs along the frame rail, underneath the brake booster, and then along the firewall. it then takes a 90 degree turn through the firewall. I have the glove box out of it and I can sorta see where the lines comes through the bulkhead. I cant see a connection. I think I may have to remove the fresh air fan and housing to get in there! And then, I'm not even sure THAT will work. this is ri-g#&damn-diculous!
